The Role of Humility

At the core of Servant Leadership is the concept of humility.  While traditional Bosses view leadership as a means of getting people to do what they want, Servant Leaders see opportunities to serve others.  Developing their people, creating connections and getting out of the way are some of the approaches often pursued by Servant Leaders.

Ken Blanchard speaks of humility in the following way:

“Humility does not mean you think less of yourself.  It means you think of yourself less”.

This is an important distinction.  In no way does humility diminish the role of leaders.  Leaders are critically important in setting direction for the team and aligning individuals around a common vision and strategy.  Humility just means that it is not all about us.  It’s about investing in our people so they can be successful.  As mentioned before, Servant Leaders often achieve results far greater than the traditional “tough” leader, in large part because of the loyalty that builds up when people are treated with respect and caring.
