Emotional Intelligence (emotional quotient or EQ)  refers to the ability to identify and manage one’s own emotions, as well as the emotions of others.  Many point to EQ as being more important that IQ as leaders rise within an organization and broaden their responsibility for larger teams.

The term Emotional Intelligence was popularized in the 1990s by Daniel Goleman.  His pioneering book Emotional Intelligence outlined five major emotional competencies:
